ABSTRACT
1. A partir de la série comparative 55 où figurent des attestations recueillies en bushong (B), rundi (J), kauma (E), tikuu, swahili (G), lukazi (K), luba Ks.,luba Sh. (L), bemba, ila (M), nsenga (N), venda et tswana (S), M. Guthrie (1970, t.III) établit un substantif protobantou *-bánjà (5/6), 7/8, 11/10 ‘courtyard’. 1 L’auteur relève 1’existence de deux sens divergents: il note en effet que le ganda ekI|bānja 7/8 signifie ‘building site’ et que le kongo central mlbānza 9/10 signifie ‘cemetery’. En guise de commentaire à la correspondance générale, il écrit que ‘the speakers of Proto-Bantu probably had a practice of keeping a clear area in front of the house’ et que ‘the reflexes of this proto-item are missing in the forest areas no doubt because the different type of environment led to the use of fenced-in enclosures rather than open courtyards’.
