ABSTRACT

This research aimed to develop a picture storybook based on a scientific approach through a problem-based learning method as a teaching material for fourth grade students.. The steps to develop the picture storybook consisted of: 1) research and information collecting; 2) planning; 3) developing a preliminary form of the product; 4) preliminary field testing; 5) main product revision; 6) main field testing; and 7) operational product revision. The product implementation consisted of the first tryout involving six students of the fourth grade of Primary School A. The second tryout involved 12 students of the fourth grade of Primary School B. Data collection instruments included a rating scale for picture storybook assessment for a material expert, a rating scale for picture storybook assessment for a language expert, a teacher response questionnaire and a student response questionnaire. Data were analyzed using validity test analysis with four scales. The result of this research was a picture storybook based on a scientific approach through a problem-based learning method, which was valid as a teaching material for fourth grade students.
