Pages 12

This chapter looks at the nature of interdisciplinarity in lexicography and how interdisciplinarity affects practical as well as theoretical lexicography. Lexicography concerns the development of theoretical and practical principles as well as the production of lexicographical tools, so several disciplines are involved in any dictionary project. Interdisciplinarity in lexicography also extends to dictionary criticism and dictionary reviews. Dictionary criticism can be part of lexicographical projects where lexicographers examine existing dictionaries to discover and describe principles and practices that may be relevant to current projects, and dictionary criticism can be independent examinations and evaluations of existing dictionaries published as reviews in journals. Developments show that lexicography is now expanding in ever-increasing circles into either an independent discipline or part of information science, to wit the growing interdisciplinarity and complexity of lexicography. Lexicography concerns the development of theoretical and practical principles as well as the production of lexicographical tools, so several disciplines are involved in any dictionary project.
