ABSTRACT

This paper presents the results of discrete element simulations of three-dimensional assembly of 1000 sphere particles. Shear tests were carried out on stable granular assemblies at various initial conditions under drained, undrained and constant p stress paths. Shear tests were carried out till critical state conditions are attained. The macroscopic results are presented with micromechanical explanation. The results have shown the validity of stress-force-fabric relationship. The results also indicate that in addition to the deviator stress, mean p and volumetric strain the average coordination number is constant at critical state.
