ABSTRACT

Sand compaction pile method is a typical method of ground improvement as the countermeasure against instability, settlement and soil liquefaction during earthquake. As material for sand compaction piles, many kinds of substitute materials are usually used recently instead of marine sand which have been used for many years, due to concerns regarding the environmental disruption caused by the unlimited utilization of marine sand. This paper describes the dynamic and mechanical characteristics of substitute materials and the case histories of applications of sand compaction pile method.
