A War Against the Robots? Career Guidance, Automation and Neoliberalism

ByTristram Hooley

This chapter argues that the growth of automation is leading to a profound transformation of work, employment and career. The form of this transformation is not pre-ordained, but rather shaped by wider neoliberal and post-neoliberal politics. Career guidance offers an important public policy strategy to address this change. However, there is a critical need to consider what stance career guidance should take. The chapter outlines three possible stances: adaptive; expanded career; and emancipatory guidance. It concludes by arguing that the claims of career guidance to allow individuals to self-actualise can only ultimately be delivered through a collective action which makes use of new technologies to remake the political economy.
