ABSTRACT

This chapter helps newborn infant physical examination (NIPE) practitioners to understand the need for the second examination completed between 6 and 8 weeks of age in the community setting. This second examination is usually carried out by the general practitioner; however, more healthcare practices are employing advanced nurse practitioners to perform this screening examination. When NIPE practitioners inform the parents that their infant requires a second examination, it might cause anxiety because they may presume that there is a concern and that something is abnormal with their child. However, this second examination is routine for all babies born in the UK. As an NIPE practitioner it is beneficial for NIPE practitioners to have an understanding of this second examination, the chapter aims to explain briefly some of the aspects of this examination to enable NIPE practitioners to fully communicate and reassure the parents of further screening available.
