ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the formal reactions of selected discussants to certain of the papers. Each discussant was chosen for his expertise in the field of inquiry covered by the respective papers. Jay Anderson and Joel Darmstadter discusses the papers by Kranzberg and Gerber. David Amidon and Simon Rottenberg comment on the contributions of Goldman and Day. Barry Chiswick and Richard Easterlin also discusses the papers presented by Thurow and Singer. Jay Anderson emphasizes a point which is not one of disagreement between Gerber and Kranzberg: the role of social institutions. Professor Kranzberg correctly and pointedly reminds us of numerous historical instances—for example, in the fields of agriculture and mineral resources— in which science and technology succeeded in rescuing society from hardships which some had seemed to sense were preordained. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, over one-half of worldwide electric power output may be atomic by the year 2000.
