ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the origin and distribution, nutritional composition, medicinal values, climatic requirement, soil requirement, cultivated varieties and post-harvest management of celery. In India, celery is a minor vegetable crop and not commercially grown. However, quite a large area in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh is under this crop for the production of its seeds, which are used for condiments, culinary and medicinal uses. Leaves of celery are used in salad or cooked as vegetable and leaf stalks. Celery is a great choice for balancing body weight as it provides low calories and dietary fibre. Celery crops require a deep, fertile, well-drained silt loam or loam soil rich in organic matter. Celery leaf miners, celery fly and aphids are the insect pests that attack celery during the growing season. Damping-off and Root Rot are the diseases that attack celery during its lifetime.
