Yard long bean, a legume crop relative to cowpea or black eye pea, is native to Southeast Asia. It is cultivated widely in tropical and subtropical regions, in warmer parts of Southeastern Asia, Thailand and Southern China. Yard long bean is a nutritious vegetable as it is a good source of carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, vitamin C and vitamin K and a fair source of protein, dietary fibres, iron, manganese and most of the B group vitamins. Yard long bean is used similar to other green beans. Yard long bean is one of the ancient cultivated vegetables. Yard long bean is a tall climbing herbaceous annual with long stringless pods. Yard long bean, mainly a warm-season crop, can be grown in a wide range of climatic conditions but it thrives best in warm and humid climate with consistent rainfall. The seed rate of yard long bean varies with variety, soil fertility, growing conditions and irrigation facilities.
