ABSTRACT

The genus Syzygium is of commercial importance with timber, fruit yielding, and medicinally utilized plants. Syzygium cumini is a traditional medicinal plant in Brazil for its antileishmanial and antifungal activity. S. cumini and other members of the genus Syzygium possess antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiabetic, antifertility, antioxidant, antihelminthic, hypolipidemic, antiasthmatic, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antinephrotoxic, anticytotoxic, central nervous system (CNS) protective, antinociceptive, cytotoxic, antimutagenic, spasmolytic, antifeedant, cosmeceutical, anticancer, and antimite activities. Banerjee et al reported the antioxidant activity of the fruit skin of S. cumini. Modi et al studied the anti-inflammatory activity of the methanolic and aqueous extracts of the seeds of S. cumini in Wistar rats using the carrageenaninduced left hind paw edema. The methanolic and aqueous extracts at a dose of 250 mg/kg body weight showed moderate to significant anti-inflammatory activity. The precoital antifertility activity of the petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extracts of seeds of S. cumini was tested in female albino rats.
