ABSTRACT

America's leadership in science and technology is crucial to maintaining a strong competitive posture in the international economy of the future. The federal government, through the National Science Foundation (NSF) and other agencies, plays a very important role in supporting basic research in science and science education, which makes the position of leadership in science and technology possible. The role of science advice in government becomes increasingly important. Good science advice is essential to wise decision-making in both the Executive and the Legislative branches of the government. The President's Science Advisor has a crucial role to play in ensuring that the United States retains its traditional position of leadership in science and technology. Without support from government, America's high technology industry is in danger of falling behind those of Japan, Europe and the Soviet Union.
