ABSTRACT
This selection is an edited version of Hirschi and Gottfredson's introduction to The Generality of Deviance, a collection of articles by their friends and students, and by Hirschi and Gottfredson themselves, published in 1994. As such, it provided an opportunity to respond to the criticisms of self-control theory that had accumulated in the first years after its publication. As the reader will see, they tend to reject all of these criticisms and to oppose to them the results of the many papers summarized in this introduction.—JHL/TH
