ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a brief content of the Memorandum of Understanding and Law on the Governing of Aceh. It provides a summary of the Aceh peace process. The chapter explains the meaning of reconciliation. It analyzes the entire reconciliation process using all four determining factors. Institutional politics is defined as a political framework for mutual cooperation that involves communication before, during, and after a peace deal. The factors change the political dynamics from hostility to cooperation even without fully addressing past wrongdoings. International context is made of the role of third parties—individuals, governments from different countries, international groups, a multilateral framework, or a broader international system. The chapter concludes with a summary of the reconciliation process in Aceh and a policy recommendation.
