ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to study the participation of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood (SMB) in the revolutionary movement of the country, its ups and downs and its future prospects but with a particular focus on the early stages of its involvement when its role was more pivotal. It contributes to the debate on how the SMB's policies have affected their internal dynamics, especially regarding the regional divisions that the organization has suffered from for decades, and the role of the younger generations and their commitment towards the traditional top-to-bottom structure of the group. When the initial protests became a real revolution, the SMB began to increase their scope of influence in Syria by means of humanitarian aid campaigns. Through the examination of the role of the SMB in the Syrian revolution, it has become apparent that they have tried to touch upon all the different spheres of action.
