ABSTRACT

The curious title of this memoir deserves a word of explanation at the outset, for it is designed to capture both the subject’s most important professional accomplishment as well as his personal character. LCTL – or the “less commonly taught languages” – were almost-invisible specks that existed in the margins of academia, until Ron Walton came along to advocate their cause. Through his ingenuity and activism, these previously unseen and unheard small voices within academia formed a collective identity, acquired the acronym LCTL in capital letters, and gained the recognition and support that they enjoy today.
