ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Finland's relations with China. Since the 1990s, Finland's commercial presence in China has grown steadily. Nokia, Kone and Rovio, to name just a few major Finnish companies, have become well-known success stories in China. Among Nordic countries, China's importance for Finland as an export market has consistently remained the highest. Currently, there are some 350 Finnish companies operating in China, providing employment for approximately 60,000 people. The total sum of Finnish investments to China is estimated at over €10bn. The Finnish government has actively been promoting investments from China, in particular for innovation and high-tech as well as tourism and travel. President Xi Jinping's 2017 visit signalled the beginning of a new partnership between Finland and China. During the state visit, the two countries signed a Joint Declaration establishing and promoting a 'future-oriented new type of cooperative partnership'. The Joint Declaration appears to be a diplomatic success for Finland, as it follows Finnish rhetoric rather than Chinese.
