ABSTRACT

In 2030, Japan will be faced with severe environmental constraints. Energy and resources will become expensive. There will be greater worries about whether the country can secure enough food for the population, and any undertaking or initiative is likely to incur excessive costs. People may become a society that is simply forced to cut back on waste and live austerely. That being the case, one should not try to maintain current lifestyles or make do with partial optimization. All need to come up with totally new lifestyles that are wholly optimized and give spiritual affluence to people despite such constraints. The chapter discusses some methodologies to transform lifestyles, as well as various proposals about how to put these ideas into practice, and the procedures for doing so. If regional lifestyles can evolve independently, then spiritually affluent lifestyles should one day be possible under even the severe environmental constraints that are likely to affect human in the future.
