ABSTRACT

A number of local municipalities, including Toyooka City, Kitakami City, Akita City, Okinoerabu Island, and Shima City, have started to implement proof-of-concept projects to change lifestyles, developed by interviews with 90-year-olds and backcasting. This chapter introduces the case of a food-related lifestyle in Toyooka City where a small district, inspired by its doubts towards a lifestyle that prioritizes convenience, has started to implement changes in lifestyle for future generations, including children. The city of Toyooka in Hyogo Prefecture is aiming to realize a lifestyle that is in harmony with nature, exemplified by its efforts to restore its wild stork population. The chapter looks at the different processes implemented by various regions and considers how and why changing lifestyles has become a growing trend across Japan. The key to promoting new lifestyles lies in being able to evaluate the implemented lifestyles.
