ABSTRACT

This chapter wraps up the current situation of aging in the region and highlights key phenomena of demographic transition affecting fertility, migration and mortality of the population. The low fertility rate, dualistic demographic structures and epidemiological and health transition have impacted aging population in many ways including the family and social structure, age-related disease, gender-related eldercare, social welfare provision and income security. This chapter elaborates on practices, reforms and recommendations by countries in Asia Pacific to respond to these transitions by showcasing policies and social reforms of the eldercare, roles and function of family and community support as well as the social perspectives on the elderly people.
