ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter highlights – based on the contributions to this volume – that extreme weather events like floods and droughts and sea level rise affect migration, remittances and adaptation. Most of the authors argue that these extreme events which show higher frequencies in recent times depletes biophysical diversity and the capacity of the ecosystem to provide food and livelihood security. The socio-economically poor are worst affected, and many resort to migration to survive. On the other hand, remittances sent by them to the families left behind in the vulnerable and affected areas provide important cushion for adaptation to cope with climate change induced extreme weather events.
