ABSTRACT

The prime focus of this chapter is to bring out the prevailing dynamics of distress seasonal labour migration from ‘drought-prone’ Mahabubnagar district of Telangana State. This is essentially important since an exodus of labour force takes place from the district especially during the lean agriculture season. Seasonal migration is altering eventually, and hence this study aims at capturing the dynamics of distress seasonal migration. The study reveals that the surveyed villages are increasingly becoming unemployable due to distress conditions and therefore witness surplus workforce. Squeezed economic opportunities, non-viable agriculture, high indebtedness, survival and people’s increased monetary aspirations seem to be not just pervasive but mounting over the years. On the other hand, seasonal migration has failed to contribute to migrants’ overall economic well-being but brought solace to the migrant families during the times of distress.
