ABSTRACT

Cape fur seals Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus (Fig. 1) inhabit the African continental shelf. While their distribution is primarily temperate or subtropical, their range extends into tropical regions. The northward flowing waters of the cold Benguela Current create a suitable and productive marine habitat for them to the north of the Tropic of Capricorn, on the west coast of southern Africa. Large breeding subpopulations are found in low latitudes in northern Namibia and southern Angola.
