Hollow Floss Fibers Characterization and Potential Industrial Applications
Importance of solving the environmental pollution has attracted the attention of designers and engineers in finding different solutions such as substituting polymer-based raw materials with the natural ones. Significant efforts are being made to find new sources of natural fibers. Among the newly discovered natural resources, Milkweed is considered a versatile substitutive fiber with numerous unique properties, which are mainly attributed to their hollow structures. The presence of hollow channel along the fiber length is responsible for their lightweight and insulation properties. Because of its ecological and chemical advantages, numerous technical application fields can be considered for the eco-friendly and non-allergenic textiles made of Milkweed fibers especially in production of medical goods. Since morphological aspects as well as physical and mechanical properties of the Milkweed fibers significantly affect their functional performance, the available information on the fibers’ characteristics and properties are summarized in this chapter. Fundamental knowledge about the spin-ability of Milkweed fibers as well as finding the optimized process conditions for their carding operation is essential for obtaining the textile products with desired properties.
