ABSTRACT

This chapter portrays the practice of art therapy with people with dementia from three different viewpoints: the author’s description of an art therapy session with a man with dementia, prominent themes from the literature written by art therapists who have worked with people with dementia, and the opinions of two people with dementia who were having art therapy at the time of writing. The three viewpoints are shown to correspond with each other although they are expressed differently, showing how this therapy focusses on the processes of making and relating to enable people with dementia to communicate and interact in an authentic way.
