ABSTRACT
Capitalizing on the nature of episodic memory and memory retrieval processes, and incorporating the principles of social dynamics, cognition, and communication, the Cognitive Interview (CI) provides investigators with a psychologically-informed approach to eliciting detailed and reliable accounts from memory. Since the introduction of the CI to the field, research efforts have focused on validating and extending work on the CI, as well as advancing the field in new and innovative directions. This chapter examines the legacy of the CI with respect to recent innovations in evidence-based investigative interviewing. The examples outlined in this chapter highlight the ongoing development of novel, flexible, theory-driven approaches for eliciting information in increasingly complex and dynamic investigative contexts.
