ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to help mentor move a beginning physical education teacher on once they have mastered the basics so as to continually enhance their teaching practices, ensure pupil learning and sustain professional aspirations. It explores practical strategies to help mentor to understand ways in which they can support and challenge beginning teacher to reflect on the many aspects of effective teaching and learning and to move out of their comfort zone to enhance pupil learning within lessons. One way to help beginning teacher reflect and engage in practice that challenges them and for them to expand or move outside of their comfort zone is to consider a risk-taking learning cycle in relation to either a problem they may have or an area they wish to develop further to enhance pupils' learning or develop their professional practice. The benefits of reflecting on, challenging and taking positive risks in practice builds confidence and empowers beginning teacher to continually develop their practice.
