ABSTRACT

Leadership assessment is about measuring characteristics (skills, abilities, knowledge, and personality) and behaviors that indicate current performance and predict future performance. Leadership assessment is the foundation for effective performance management. This chapter examines the characteristics of leadership and methods for measuring them, with a focus on assessment centers and multisource (360-degree) feedback surveys. The chapter also describes how assessments are used for executive selection (assessments at the top echelons of an organization), leadership development, and performance evaluation and feedback. Criticisms of traditional assessments and appraisal processes are reviewed, such as annual ratings limiting focus of attention and not producing information that can improve current performance. Ongoing and formal periodic assessments that stimulate frequent discussions about goals and performance are valuable and reflect the changing needs of organizations. Leadership assessments can be flexible and behavioral, and reflect real-time demands. Leaders can learn to use assessment strategies and methods to give and accept meaningful feedback that contributes to their career development and their organization’s success.
