ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews the literature on the association between NSSI and compulsive disorders, including obsessive compulsive disorder and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. A special focus is provided to the comorbidity of NSSI and compulsive disorder, as well as distinctions and overlap in characteristics, treatment response, and neurobiology/neurochemistry. In addition to their overlap, the compulsive nature of some NSSI behaviors is explored. Recommendations for advancing our empirical and clinical understanding of the association between NSSI and compulsive disorders are provided.
