Sports performers, sport psychologists, and coaches frequently use mental training techniques to gain the competitive edge in sport. Imagery is one technique that provides athletes with opportunities to improve performance in addition to that achieved through physical practice alone. This chapter reviews research related to imagery in sport, in particular self-paced endurance tasks, and provides recommendations on implementing imagery interventions, including guidance on evaluating imagery ability and enhancing the imagery experience.
