ABSTRACT

Whereas endurance sport athletes experience plentiful health benefits from exercise, their sport participation involves increased risk for particular symptoms of mental health disorders. What are common and unique mental health disorders in endurance athletes? We explore anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and psychological aspects of injury via a case study of a university distance runner. Mental health disorders may force endurance athletes to take a detour on their journey toward personal enjoyment and peak performance, but identification and treatment of these disorders help athletes get back on track.
