ABSTRACT

The Monastery of Batalha is a remarkable symbol of Portugal, not only because it is a historical landmark, but also because of its great engineering and architectural construction. For its conservation and restoration, it is necessary to know its characteristics and properties as well as techniques and products for rehabilitation. The objective of this work was the study and inspection of the Founder's Chapel, of the Monastery of Batalha, evaluating its state of conservation. The development of the study was based on visual evaluation by observing the existing pathologies, performing their mapping and trying to frame and interconnect the possible causes/effects. To support this work, a campaign of nondestructive tests was carried out; namely, the measurement of ultrasonic propagation, thermography and humidity, with the equipment available at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria. The ultrasound and Schmidt hammer test results are in line with each other regarding the characteristics of the stone.
