Opportunity Cost of Testing
The opportunity cost of doing one test is the benefit non-technical executives would have gotten from the other test they would have done. The opportunity cost of image upload tests is the information non-technical executives would have gotten from upgrade tests. The opportunity cost of upgrade tests is the information non-technical executives would have gotten from cross-browser testing. In some places, opportunity cost is measured in dollars as a company policy. If this policy is in place, find a senior business stakeholder to assist the test team in assigning those values, as the translation to a dollar figure is highly specific to each individual organization. Think of changing opportunity costs as moving pieces around on a puzzle board—the fewer spaces we have, the fewer things we can move around. Exposing opportunity cost early gives the freedom to change. Every opportunity has a cost.
