ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the use of the internet by terrorist groups by focusing on the strategic, tactical, and operational levels, and provides an analysis on how Al Qaeda and Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) have used the internet. It focuses on the most widely studied group of Islamist terrorists, ISIS, due to the sheer volume of information available on it and given its rise. The chapter discusses how terrorists and terrorist organizations use the internet and the concept of e-jihad, explaining its evolution and how different terrorist organizations have embodied this over time. T. Mozes and G. Weimann find that most of the categories are applicable when undertaking an in-depth investigation of the Palestinian Information Center website, which they argue is a gateway to Hamas’s online propaganda. The internet is used by different individuals for different reasons.
