ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on two of these popular Chinese Muslim preachers–Felix Siauw and Firdaus Wong–who are active in both online and off-line dakwah. It examines how social media, together with other social processes, are shaping and describes contemporary Islamic discourses and practices in Malaysia and Indonesia. For many preachers, such beautification and visualization of dakwah are crucial for their preaching, not only to increase visibilities and draw attentions, but also to convince their audience and followers to believe in the messages they are delivering. Felix made a Facebook post on 22 May 2017 proposing that Muslims should view dakwah as an art of transmitting the truth, and that it should be made keren. To complement the short social media communication, Felix’s dakwah team’s YukNgaji organizes various online religious classes, as well as off-line Islamic talks and hangout. Multiracial Reverted Muslim, founded and chaired by Firdaus Wong, is his main dakwah platform.
