ABSTRACT

International transport routes criss-cross Russia in shortest distances with minimal crossing of state borders. They run on the territory with the same legal system, which assures the fastest delivery speeds. Besides, Russia has an extensive railroad and waterway network with a capacity reserve and a developing highway network, which would save large investments into the development of international transport corridors. The system of international transport corridors through the Russian territory is formed in accordance with geography and structure of existing and prospective international transport connections. The transport project initiated on political grounds finally never became fully functional. The Northern Sea Route is an international transport corridor providing the shortest shipping distances between Western Europe and the Asia-Pacific countries. Creation of an international transport corridor and further modernization of the Trans-Siberian Railway should foster the development of industrial infrastructure of fourteen districts, three regions, two republics and one autonomous district of Russia.
