ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the role of curriculum in elementary schools. Ensuring lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) and gender diversity inclusion means that our curriculum must contain both windows and mirrors: stories that provide windows into the lives of others and stories that are mirrors reflecting our own experiences. In this chapter, one will learn the current legislative context for LGBTQ-focused curricular reform in elementary schools. Then one will encounter several frameworks that one can use to analyze, evaluate, and enhance our curriculum to build a safer, more welcoming and inclusive learning experience. The chapter describes each framework, then discusses their similarities and differences, and provides examples of how to examine our curriculum utilizing those frameworks. Finally, one will read and reflect on two stories of practice in relation to the frameworks addressed in this chapter.
