ABSTRACT

The current study aims to encourage sustainable consumption behaviour of water and energy in Saudi Arabia. A total of 784 questionnaires were completed by participants in the Makkah region from different backgrounds and age groups (between 24–64). About 78% of the participants believe that education can change the current consumption behaviour. Also, 80% of participants believe that receiving incentives would encourage sustainable consumption. 94% of the participants agreed that removing water and electricity subsidies might affect low-income families negatively. Thus, setting the suitable incentives, green policies, and suitable school curricula can achieve sustainable consumption behaviour within the framework of the Saudi Vision 2030 and support Goal 12 of the SDGs.
