ABSTRACT

Ethnicity is one of the dimensions of diversities. It is one of the key dimensions, characteristics, markers, and contents of the identity of individuals, groups, and communities. Historically, the importance of ethnicity in ethnically diverse environments increased when a certain ethnic community tried to establish its dominance at the expense of others (other ethnicities), particularly when states transformed into single nation-states. Conflicts carry simultaneously constructive and destructive potentials. To prevent their negative impacts, we must prevent their uncontrolled escalation, particularly their transformation into high-intensity, possibly violent conflicts. In studying specific divided societies paid special attention to communication, coexistence and cooperation among individuals of different ethnic origins and among distinct ethnic communities, public discourses, normative and institutional frameworks and channels of communication. Long-term stability, coexistence, and successful cooperation in diverse environments require coming to terms with the past, present, and future, particularly in formulating and developing common visions, principles, strategies, and policies for a sustainable future.
