ABSTRACT

Environmental conflicts that arise in the international arena should be placed in a unique class of conflict management practice. International environmental conflict can be quite complex. The “environment” can mean just about anything related to the physical or biological environment. Larger global environmental dynamics can arise due to regional or global sources. Maintaining a neutral stance, practicing unbiased conduct, and behaving in an impartial manner is a mainstay of many mediation workshops and training programs as well as in academic courses. Some environmental conflicts can be managed through policies, regulations, rules, laws, and treaties. Most of these mechanisms are designed around the idea that environmental conflict requires a systemic approach and thus quite a few forms of knowledge and experience are necessary. There are ways to address these issues and it begins with the implementation of some of the principles of effective conflict intervention.
