ABSTRACT

Nonpermanent migrants are officially registered as legal residents in their places of origin. The primary aim of migrants in going to the city is to find employment or an occupation to earn something to bring home as remittances. Nonpermanent migrants and their families form one extended kinship economic unit, and the remittances form part of the household income. In the study of population mobility it has often been found that a journey has more than one objective. For example, an individual who goes to the market to sell agricultural products will also visit or meet relatives living near to the marketplace. It is sometimes difficult to understand how much mobility results from multiple objectives. In the three case study areas the primary objective of commuting is economic. Respondents who commute mentioned that their primary objective was to look for an occupation. The chapter suggests that nonpermanent movement in Indonesia and that it has intensified considerably since the country's Independence.
