ABSTRACT

Academic libraries have always been central to the student experience and continually review and update their service provision to anticipate and respond to its changing needs. This chapter examines the student learning experience and its impact on library services. It describes the ways in which services and staff interact with students to support their learning and how students work within the environments created by the new learning centres. The profile of the student population has changed considerably since the early 1990s, not only in terms of increased numbers but also in the diversity of students. The learning centre response has also been to examine the needs of specific groups of students, with a view to integrating their learning experience within a whole provision. The experiences of Sheffield Hallam University, Leeds Metropolitan University and the University of Lincoln are used to illustrate a learning centre response to the issues.
