Design considerations for additive manufacturing of feed channel spacers for spiral wound membrane modules

Feed channel spacers are important in membrane modules. Fabrication of structurally and functionally complex spacers can be achieved by advanced manufacturing methods such as Additive Manufacturing (AM). However it is unknown how the variety of AM techniques affects the printability and performance of spacers. In this research, three different AM techniques are compared and it is suggested that new spacer design should be focused not only on the geometry of the spacer, but also the part to model accuracy and surface property associated with the AM technique used to make the spacer.
