ABSTRACT

This chapter considers main of South-South migration from Nepal and examines their impacts on the sending households and communities. It analyses the impact of migration on the socioeconomic situation of migrant-sending households. The chapter focuses on the difference in the impact of the two streams of migration-namely, cross-border migration to India and international migration to other destinations. It describes the cross-border migration to India is simply referred as 'cross-border migration' and international migration to other destinations as 'overseas migration'. The chapter examines the household-level socioeconomic impact of international migration, both cross-border migration to India and overseas migration to Malaysia and the Gulf countries. Before analysing the impact of migration on the socioeconomic situation of migrant households, the chapter explores their reasons for choosing migration as a livelihood strategy and their perceptions of change in their livelihood situation.
