ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a summary of athlete monitoring tools and systems that can be used in gymnastics programs. Monitoring gymnasts enables the coaching team to be better informed about their gymnasts in order to maximize the gymnast's net performance potential. Monitoring gymnasts can be achieved by secure online athlete management systems with computer-based and mobile interfaces for easy access. A well designed and facilitated monitoring system can provide the coaches and gymnasts with improved understanding of the demands of the sport, as well as the attributes required for greater success. For injury prevention, it is recommended that several monitoring methods are utilized including subjective and objective measures of the gymnast's wellbeing. Elizabeth J. Bradshaw et al. observed large biomechanical changes to the jumping patterns of female artistic gymnasts during rapid height growth. This demonstrated that continuous jumping and hopping tests are a worthwhile addition to a monitoring system for this phase of a gymnast's development for injury prevention purposes.
