ABSTRACT

Gymnastics physical fitness implies that there are some specific biological/physiological/physical regulatory processes that are at least somewhat unique to the gymnast. For example, a fitness characteristic composed of strength and speed refers to the application of high levels of force but rapidly. The unambiguous message means that training must proceed in certain ways and that training for gymnastics will not be like training for other sports. Fitness models are also sometimes called "Profiles". A number of investigations have looked specifically at determining a fitness model or profile for gymnasts. For example, gymnastics training and performance requires considerable strength fitness. Strength fitness is more effectively and efficiently acquired over the long term by beginning with strength-endurance, followed by maximal strength, then a focusing of the maximal strength to gymnastics-specific strength, and completed by a maintenance period that follows the duration of competitions.
