ABSTRACT

The complexity of gymnastics' events requires not only different training approaches, but also a wide range of physical and physiological testing in order to monitor the progress of each gymnast. In all cases, the calculated power output does not reflect the physiological mechanisms underpinning the athletes' performance. Flexibility assessment in gymnastics is a daily routine at the very beginning of the specialisation stage when athletes are developing their basic physical skills. However, the measurements are made difficult by having a number of complex parameters, such as a wide variety of technical skills, muscular contractions and speed of the stretch but only a limited number of standardised specific tests. The literature provides a variety of jumping tests which might be used in different sports/contexts. The repeated jumping test is also commonly used for lower body muscular endurance. Muscular endurance is a significant discriminator of high versus low level gymnasts.
