ABSTRACT

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) occurs as a natural biomolecule (a compound similar to vitamin) and essential micronutrient present in every cell of our body, chiefly in the mitochondrial membranes. The major role of CoQ10 is to produce energy by acting as a cofactor in electron transport chain. Due to the physiological changes and with advancing age, level of CoQ10 decreases in the body. To restore its concentration in the body and to reverse the conditions arising from its deficiency, CoQ10 needs to be given from outside. Critical role of CoQ10 in cellular bioenergetics lead to its use in neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular and neuromuscular diseases. CoQ10, being an established antioxidant has been a part of many skin care products too, especially for anti-aging purposes. In totality, it is widely accepted as a therapeutic agent to treat a number of diseases/disorders, nutraceutical/food supplement and a cosmetic agent. But it has some limitations too as an entity. CoQ10 is a poorly water soluble, high molecular weight molecule, therefore show poor absorption and thus low bioavailability. Numerous approaches have been explored by the researchers from time to time to overcome these limitations. The present chapter shall discuss the chemistry, source and uses of Ubidecarenone followed by description of various nanosized carrier systems of this biomaterial for its effective and safe delivery through major routes.
