ABSTRACT

Lakes play an important role in the economy and are critically important for human activities such as drinking, irrigation, fishing (for a lot of developing countries, fish is the largest source of protein), navigation, and even recreation. A lot of literature has been written on transboundary rivers, their treaties and commissions, little has been done on transboundary lakes (their conflicts and treaties including commissions). Globally, there are over 27 million natural lakes and about half a million artificial lakes, and the total volume of these lakes constitute about 70% of the available surface freshwater (Texas State University 2014). From these, there are about 1,600 transboundary lakes and 455 transboundary aquifers (Transboundary Waters Assessment Program, n.d.).
