ABSTRACT

Potential risk assessment is essentially important to ensure the safety in the construction of reinforcement concrete arch bridge. The New Midi Bridge, a reinforced concrete arch with 182 m in China (Fig. 1), was constructed with cantilever casting method. Due to its characteristics of long period construction and large span, the risk sources are various and the risk assessment aiming at qualification control became more challenging and was much different with the cable-stayed bridge and continuous beam bridge in cantilever construction. This paper presents an in-depth methodology of the risk assessment of construction of reinforced concrete arch bridge. Firstly, the risk sources, occurrence probabilities, and hazard consequences were analyzed through Expert Investigation Method (Ruan et al. 2008). The multiple risk sources were researched from three aspects of structure property, environment factors and construction facilities (Fig. 2), and Fatalness Analysis Method was introduced, shown in Figure 3 (He et al. 2015). Risk sources in the FAM analysis were rated in 5 levels according to their harm degree, occurrence probability, predictability, and detectability. For kernel risk sources, finite element models were established to evaluate the risk levels quantitatively. Analysis of three representative risk sources are presented. Then, with combined quantitative and qualitative analysis, the results of risk assessment were obtained. At last, according to the results of risk evaluation, the kernel indices that can be used in the construction monitoring was suggested. Practices have shown that these methods can effectively reduce risks and ensure construction safety.
